Notes
General:
Emmigrated : Arrived at Port Adelaide 6 Feb 1852 on board the ship "Caucasian".
History : Jessie Dewar McDonald, as she was known for most of her
adult life was an aka or alias. Proof of this arose during the
ardias task of tracing her immigration to Australia and
her burial location. Although Jessie was married under her
alias, she travelled to Australia with her parents as Janet
when aged 17 years. This caused some confusion at first
until I finally traced her burial site where it was confirmed that
the registered name was indeed Janet Messenger. Why this
was done is unsure although it may have been due to having
the same name as her sister in law and her mother. It was
also found there was a somewhat reknowned Jessie Dewar
she may have been named after who was born in Scotland
at the turn of the century. This Jessie Dewar was known
as Janet, the reverse of our Jessie. She married into fame
early on to a Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther and then
later to the Reverand Robert Bulloch-Marsham. She
later died in Caversfield, Oxfordshire.
Jessie Dewar McDonald spent all of her married life at Penola
in South Australia. After the Death of her huband John in 1873,
she decided to travel to Claremont in Perth Western Australia
where she could be with her daughter Martha. Jessie was
buried in Claremont in 1907 in her 73rd year. Her daughter was
buried at the same cemetery 30 years later in 1937.
