General:
Lived in Kirkhill in the district of Penicuil (near Edinburgh). In Nov 1851 left Scotland with wife Janet for Australia. Travelling with their children Thomas (12 years) and Skirvin (4 Years) With them were their adult children William, Janet, Agnes, Jessie, John and Charles. Departed from Plymouth on the ship Caucasion. A wooden hull, three masted barque , rigged sailing ship measuring 563 tons. William was listed as a ploughman and his adault sons as farm labourers. In November 1851 the ship left Liverpool with 237 souls aboard and sailed for South Australia.They arrived at Port Adelaide on 8 February 1852. Rented Winella Cottage on the Robe Road at Penola to Mother Mary McKillop and also made available the stables in Queen Street for her use as a School. The land has now been made into an attractive memorial park to Mother Mary.

Two South Australian brothers in the AIF have both recently been awarded the Military Cross. They are Lieutenant Ronald Lachlan McDougall,29 of Solomontown, and Captain Alan Fredrick McDougall, 24 of Fullarton. They were decorated within a few weeks of each other for outstanding gallantry and leadership. Lieut McDougall, who is in New Guinea, previously served at Darwin. Capt McDougall, who is in Borneo, celebrated his twenty first bithday in Palestine. Lieut. A (later Capt.) McDougall's platoon was ordered to capture a steep and rugged feature dominating the beach head and seaward approaches to Balikpapan. Throughout the advance up the steep slopes, his platoon was subjected to intense fire from concealed and strongly entrenched pill boxes. Mc Dougall's personal bravery was asplendid example to his men and, together with his skilful leadership, kept casualties at a minimum and enabled his men to display their finest fighting qualities. The capture of this feature had in important influence on the success of the entire operation. 64
