Emmigrated : Arrived at Port Phillip (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) Feb 1844
on board the ship "Wallace" on an assisted passage.
He travelled as a bounty Immigrant, working as a farm servant,
for Mr. Sutherland in Bunningyong (near Ballarat), Victoria.
John settled in Penola, South Australia. How he travelled to
South Australia is uncertain. He married a local girl Jessie
Dewar Mcdonald in 1854. John was a carpenter by trade and
until he was able to build his timber home they settled in a slab
shed. He helped build many of the early timber homes in Penola.
The Messenger famillies were Bellringers in England and it is presumed that Edward Messenger who was with John in Penola was a brother who later went to Pt Augusta.
Lived in Arthur Street Penola next to the School Oval. He planted the Pepper trees in his large fruit and vegetable garden that is now part of the Oval. The Show Society purchased the land to enlarge the Show Grounds prior to it becoming the School Oval.
In 1863 John as a J.P. served on the jury inquiring into a major fire. He was also an officer of the Forrestors Lodge and on the committee to establish a Mechanics Institute and Public Library. 1864 saw him signing a petition to open up public roads.
Leased Section 68 of Cluny from Ralston and Simpson for an 8 year term commencing on 1 May 1865.
Marriage: Registration No 2463 South Australian Directory of 1872: states "Messenger John, farmer, Penola"
John Messenger in 1866 provided a Stable on his land to Mary MacKillop (now Saint Mary) to start her first school. 65,66
