A brief history of Thomas and John Argus who were responsible for establishing the name Argus in Australia and New Zealand.

Nicholas and Priscilla (nee Allison) Argus had 5 children between 1815 and 1824. Mary Ann was born in Wiltshire and the 4 boys Thomas, John, Nicholas and William all born in Tregony in Cornwall England, with their details being recorded at the parish church of St Cuby with Tregony.

In the early 1840s after the marriages of both Thomas and John and the commencement of their respective families they emigrated to Australia, within a year of each other, initially establishing themselves in Victoria.

The children of the families subsequently established themselves in various location around Australia and a grandson of Thomas moved to New Zealand in 1901. If you are an Argus or are related to an Argus in Australia or New Zealand you are probably a descendant of either Thomas or John.
