Sudden Death of Mr S Argus
Mr Samuel Argus, ganger in charge of the Kerang-Koondrook tramway, died with painful suddeness on Monday morning last. He went to the Kerang tram shed at the usual time, in readiness to commence work for the day, and exchanged greetings with his fellow workers. He then sat down, and a minute later fell over backwards. His mates ran to him, but found that he was dead. The deceased had been employed on the tramline for the past three years. Previously he was in the employ of the Railway Department, and was looked upon as a conscientous worker and a thoroughly competent man. At the council meeting on Tuesday week last, Mr Harden referred to his capabilities and to the fact that he thoroughly understood his work. He had seldom complained concerning his health, and appeared to be quite well when he went to the tram shed on Monday. Recently after pushing some heavy trucks he had remarked to his mates that that work distressed him greatly.
The late Mr Argus was 67 years of age, and had been twice married. He leaves a family of nine children, they being Ernest [in New Zealand], Miss Ivy and Mrs Ryan [at Buffalo], Harold [Camperdown], Edgar and William [Kerang] and two daughters [in Gippsland]. The remains were sent to Devenish for internment.
Inquiry. Mr F J Taverner conducted an inquiry into the circumstances of the death at Kerang on Monday last. Leslie Argus said that he was a son of deceased who was 67 years of age. When he came to work he saw his father lying apparently dead. His father had been in good health, but had complained that the work of pushing trucks was killing him.
Doris Smith, housekeeper, said that when Mr Argus left for work in the morning he was apparently in good health, He neve conplained of illness.
Frederick Graham gave evidence as to deceased's coming to the shed and speaking to him. Deceased then fell over and gasped, and when witness went to him he was dead. He never complained of illness, but had remarked about the work of pushing trucks affecting him.
John O'Grady gave similar evidence.
A verdict was recorder of death from heart failure.
