General:
Born 19 April 1909, near Naracoorte in South Australia.
·Lilian and her twin brother Perc were the youngest of seven children of William and Anne Nicholson.
·They lived on a farm and Lilian went to school in Naracoorte
·She was the last surviving member of that family.
·Lilian moved to Adelaide as a young woman.
·She married Eric Lord on 1 July 1937 and they had two children, Peter and Kathryn.
·They built the house at 140 Sixth Avenue Royston Park, 61 years ago to her own design and she oversaw the construction each day.
·Lilian lived in the house all her married life.
Gardening was the love of her life.
·At Royston Park:
·A Jacaranda was the first tree planted 61 years ago and is about to come into flower again.
·Planted a Yew tree - despite being advised by the nurseryman that she wouldn't live long enough to see it grow - how wrong this advice was.
·A Weeping Silver Pear tree was transported by train from Victoria and quarantined before being planted as a feature of the garden. As this was not a very common method of acquiring trees it was considered extravagant.
·Native plants formed a large part of her garden and she was a pioneer in promoting their use in domestic gardens.
·The ABC filmed the garden for a television gardening program.
·Proudly opened her garden as part of the Open Garden Scheme with grand children at the gate collecting for Charity.
·At Mount Lofty Golf Club:
·Designed and landscaped the native garden by the Club house.
She enjoyed playing golf, for which she had a single figure handicap, an avid reader of books with a keen interest in history and particularly the letters of Harold Nicholson to his wife Vita Sackville-West and the making of the garden at Sissinghurst.
In 1962 the first two of her five grandchildren were born and in 1990 the first of her
great grand daughters was born.
Christmas was always a time of strong tradition at Lilian's house. The family recalls that Lilian for many years had a live pine tree in a large tin pot which was manhandled into the dining room every year and decorated by the her grandchildren just after the best silver had been cleaned ready for Christmas day.
The highlight to Christmas day was a large coin stuffed plum pudding brought in flaming with brandy custard and cream. The sixpences and threepences were changed by Eric and are still used in the pudding each Christmas.
Tradition extended to the gifts Lilian gave her grandchildren - a watch at age 12 years and a book each year - chosen to expand the mind.
Later, Lilian handed her special Christmas pudding recipe to her daughter where the tradition continues.
Although a private person and very independent Lilian was interested in the outside world and happy to discuss the news of the day with her family and a small circle of close friends.
She was progressive and modern in her attitude to life and health, which contributed to her longevity.
She was much loved by her children, grand children and great grand children.
In the past few years the house always had many flowers brought in from the garden so she could appreciate their beauty all day.
Lilian was determined to continue to live out her years in the house and garden that she loved so much. A goal she achieved!
In her later years Lilian continued to enjoy her books, her garden and the company of her family.
