ERIC LORD - September 1994

Born 12 May 1906 at Gawler, one of three boys (Eric, Clem and Gordon) and one girl (Margaret).

His interests through boyhood and youth were Scouts, football and cricket.

After completing his secondary schooling at Gawler he studied accountancy and then took a position with the Government in the Attorney Generals Department.

He later transferred to the Commonwealth Taxation Department.

He had a successful career in the Department rising to the position of Assistant Deputy Commissioner for South Australia.

In 1937 he married Lilian Nicholson. Their son Peter was born in 1939 and their daughter Kathryn in 1941. Both Kathryn and Peter provided Eric with Grandchildren. Peter married Christina Matthews and they had Tony and Deborah. Kathryn married John Rathbone and they had three children Alexandra, Candida and Nigel.

Eric was delighted to see his great grandchildren, Kayla, Elise, Catherine and Elizabeth because he always had an affinity with the young.

He was much loved by his children, grandchildren and their friends and his great grandchildren.

His interests outside of work and his family were the Freemasons and Manchester Unity Lodges. He was very active in the lodge activities and became absorbed in the various Rituals and History. He held the position of Grand Master with Freemason's Lodge.

He has written a detailed and authoritative history of the Manchester Unity Lodge. The Lodge has shown interest in the work for publication,

He was later joined in the Lodge by his son Peter for quite some time.

He worked tirelessly visiting sick and infirm members of the Lodge at the Manchester Unity Home at Walkerville. He tended their vegetable gardens and was always quick to help with the washing up. Many a time he brought home doggy bags for Kate's Dalmatians and fresh home grown vegetables for the family.

Eric retired from the Taxation Department at age 57 and soon joined Kosters Pottery at Evandale as Company Secretary for a few years.

Eric played cricket for the Tax Office and kept an interest in cricket all his life, albeit the television variety. Many afternoons were spent at home or at Kate's place watching the cricket and providing scores to passing grandchildren.

All through his life Eric was generous to his family and generous with his time to Lodge Members. He helped many with financial advice and moral support.

He was a very private person with strong principles but he enjoyed the camaraderie of Lodge and sporting acquaintances.

He was always working at something, be it trips to Waikerie, Lodge visits to the country and interstate or to relatives at Echunga. He maintained a home workshop and produced wooden toys for his great grandchildren and to help others in fund raising.

After retiring Eric joined the St Peters Bowling Club. In addition to playing Pennant Bowls, he worked in maintaining the Club's grounds and facilities.

In October 1985, having already suffered a series of minor strokes he was able to walk his eldest grandaughter down the aisle at her wedding at the St Peters College Chapel.

Gradually, these strokes were taking their toll, and his mobility deteriorated, but he was able to continue making small wooden toys in his home workshop.

About two years ago, his health deteriorated to the point where he was accepted into a Roselin Court hostel unit.

His condition continued to deteriorate, he could only speak with difficulty and become frustrated by not being able to clearly express himself.

Eric was transferred this year to nursing home care at the Helping Hand Centre and there he remained until his death on 8 September 1994.

General:
Arrived at Fremantle, Western Australia on 8 April 1863 on the ship "Burlington" from Southhampton, England.
Arrival records show :
James 36 years
Martha 25 years
Selina 1 year

Lloyds register of 1863 shows the following details of the "Burlington"
Type: Snow (see below)
Master: J Gibson
Owner: Gibson & Co
287 tons
Built: Blythe in 1820
Home Port: North Shields, England.

A snow (pronounced "snoo") or snaw, is a sailing vessel. A type of brig - snows are often referred to as "snow-brigs" - snows were primarily used as a merchant ship, but saw war service.
Snows carried square sails on both masts, but had a small trysail mast, sometimes called a 'snowmast', stepped immediately abaft the mainmast. This mast could carry a trysail with a boom, with the luff of the trysail hooped to it. Sometimes, instead of a trysail mast, snows carried a horse on the mainmast, with the luff of the trysail attached to it by rings.
