The following information has been extracted from records obtained from the Australian Archives, Series B2455, Personnel dossiers for 1st Australian Imperial Forces..

Charles George Henry Gray enlisted in Adelaide for Service Abroad with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 25 November 1915 at age 33 years and 7 months. His Regimental Number was 4125, rank was a Private and his initial unit being "A" Company, 2nd Depot Battalion AIF. His Medical Record on enlistment shows his height was 6 foot 2 1/2 inches, he weighed 160 pounds and his chest was 34 - 36 inches. He has a medium complection, blue eyes, dark brown hair and his religious denomination was Church of England. He was declared fit conditional on having upper and lower denture plates. He nominated his Mother, Mrs Eliza Thompson of Penola, South Australia as his next of kin. He was not married.

A chronological list of events extracted from his records are: 25 November 1915, enlisted and appointed to "A" Company 2nd Depot Battalion AIF under the Comanding Officer Lt. Col Hancock. 25 November 1915 - 1 December, Exhibition AIF Camp. 1 December 1915, 15/12 Infantry, 1st Depot Battalion. 1 January 1916, 10Rfts 27Battalion 9 March 1916, embarked Adelaide on the HMAT (His Majesty's Australian Transport) "Mongolia". 6 May 1916, suffering from Pyrexia, he was admitted to the 2nd Auxilliary Staty Hospital at Tel-el-Kebir, Alexandria. 10 May 1916, admitted to the Military Infectous Hospital, Shubra, Abbassia, Cairo suffering from Enterica, his condition was classified as "dangerously ill". 1 June 1916 pronounced "out of danger". 10 June 1916, admitted to the No4 Auxilliary Hospital from Shubra Hospital with Relapsing Fever. 15 June 1916, transferred to the Ras-el-Tin Convalescent Depot at Heliopolis, Alexandria. 28 June 1916, Discharges to Tel-el-Kebir. 2 August 1916, Embarked overseas with 27th Battalion 2nd Divisional Depot on the H T (Hired Transport) "Franconia" from Alexandria.

The following information was obtained from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, Office of Australian War Graves - 12 March 1997. "According to our records, Private Gray has no known grave. His name is therefore commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial to the missing, France." Original Register Text: GRAY, PTE. Charles George Henry, 4125. 32nd Bn. 6th Nov., 1916. Son of Eliza Thompson (formerly Gray), of Penola, South Australia, and the late Charles Gray. Born at Millicent, South Australia. Cemetery Location: Villers-Bretonneux is a village 16 kilometres east of Amiens on the straight main road to St Quentin. The Memorial stands in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, which is 2 kilometres north of the village on the east side of the road to Fouilloy. Although it is not known in which battle Pte. Gray lost his life the following battle aligns with his date of death. "The 1 Anzac Corps returned to the Somme and participated in the local attacks which formed part of the battle of the Ancre Heights (1st October - 11 November), the last but one of the Battles of the Somme, 1916. These attacks in the morass between Gueudecourt and the Butte de Warlencourt involved particularly difficult fighting and heavy casualties. In October and November the Australian Imperial Force lost, mainly on the Somme, nearly 2000 dead".
