THE EARLY DAYS.
I was born on 19 August 1913 at Miss McKay's cottage in Riddock Street Penola, with nurse McKay attending. My parent's were living at their house 7 miles out of Penola at Comaum.
My father was a butcher and drove a horse and cart 7 miles into Penola to sell his meat from the back of the cart. The cart had a chopping block at the rear.
He purchased a house on the Millicent Road about 2 miles out of Penola where we lived for about 8 years. He then bought a house on the corner of Church Street and Bowden Street which included a shop and continued his business. The property included a house of 10 rooms and a slaughter house which was not used. A slaughter house was built at the Millicent Road property earlier and he continued to use this facility.
I was the third child after Dudley and Daphne. Curtis, Guthrie (Tump also known later as Tom) and Gay were born later.
We shifted to the house in Church Street Penola when I was about 7 years and I had started school, what a relief not to have to walk such a long distance(2 miles) from the Millicent Road property. The headmaster when I started school was Alfred Tresize and he was later followed by Mr McDonald.
My father continued buying sheep and cattle, slaughtering and delivering meat. My mother worked in the butcher shop.
Across the road cattle and sheep sales were held and there was a Saw Mill. Animals would be moved up and down Church Street to the sale yards which was frightening to children. Sometimes a circus would be held there, a horse sale, clothing and goods in a tent, saw milling, buck jumping shows (rodeo), eventially the area was made into gardens.
The Police Station was in Penola North, this land was sold for 10 pounds a block when the new Police Station was built in Church Street south of the National Bank.
I played hockey for the School team and later for the Town team against Mt Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte. Attended Physical Culture Classes run by Miss Muriel, Miss McLeod and later Mrs K D Harris one night a week.
WORK IN PENOLA.
I later left school and helped at home as my mother did a lot of work in the Butcher Shop.
I started work for Mr Katchor at Mt Gambier selling clothing and drapery. Sometimes I would sell at Naracoorte, Bordertown and Penola.
My brothers worked on our farm, we grew tobacco. At first it was a big success but later the crop was caught a disease (Blue mould) and was of no value.
I worked at Clive McFarlands Penola Station picking and grading tobacco on a casual basis with Lyla Bott (eventually to become my brother Dudley's wife), Flo Marcus and Isabella Neilson, We would be collected and returned to Penola and earned 5 shillings per hour.
My two eldest brothers (Dudley and Curtis) worked on our block of land, about 1000 acres, at Comaum. They grew tobacco and run shep and if they were cutting chalf I would have to go to out and help them including cutting wood. My brothers would sometimes camp on the land. Dudley married Lyla Bott and they lived on one part of the land and Curtis married Joyce Williams and liived and farmed the other part of the land. Guthrie would work in the Butcher Shop.
WORKING CAREER
I worked at YWCA near East Terrace. Deceided I would like to see more of Australia so I then worked in Melbourne, Sydney and later in Brisbane each for 6 months before returning to Sydney to work at the same place as I had earlier.
Met Reg in Sydney and married in 1939. We came to Penola for a break. Things wern't working too good so we separated, I had three boys and lived close to Lavender Bay in North Sydney. My Mother came over to Sydney and helped me to pack up and return to Penola. Frank was 4 years, Graham 2 years and Garry 13 months.
After some time I deceided to go to Adelaide to work. Graham stayed with my mum until I could get settled. Frank stayed with my sister Daphne. I got a job at Pt Adelaide so Garry came with me and we stayed with my youngest sister Gay who lived in the area. Gay had a son Robin who was about the same age as Garry.
Guthrie came to Adelaide and wanted me to return to Penola to work for him in the butcher shop and said I could also get a part time job as a Librarian. We all moved back to Penola.
From 1948 - 1951, I was the Librarian of the Penola Public Library and Secretary/Treasurer of the Penola Mechanics Institute. While I was working part time at the Library, the school of Mother Mc Killop had been completed and requested if they could be given Father Tennyson Wood's Collection that had been on display in the Library some considerable years. The committee agreed and I was to see theInstitute Caretaker George Mepstead and a Mrs Mulligan from the School to take charge of the same.
MOVE TO ADELAIDE.
In 1954, some time after my mother passed away my father deceided to move to Adelaide to live and asked me and the boys to go also. Frank started high school and Graham and Garry went to the Norwood Primary School.
We initially lived at 2 Botanic Street, Hachney but later I purchased a house at 27 First Avenue, St Peters where I lived for 43 years. In December 1995 I moved into a Hostel unit at the Clayton Church Homes, Beulah Road, Norwood and then sold the house in First Ave., St Peters.
I worked in Adelaide as a Food Supervisor at the YWCA Hostel in Hindley Street. When this building was required by the Owners I worked at the Myer Appollo Dining Room for 3 months and then moved to BP Australia and established a Canteen in their building on North Tce and later in a newer building in Flinders Street. I retired from BP in 1956 after 12 years.
TRAVEL.
I planned to travel so initially I went to New Zealand. I worked at St Helens Hospital, I was in charge of the staff and food and Matron was in charge of the nurses.
In the 11 year period from 1967 to 1987 I travelled to 78 countries, many of them on several occasions.
LIFE IN PENOLA
Can remember Dan Carney pushing his cart from Penola North to meet the morning train about 9:00am, to sell his fruit.
Very few cars around and if you heard a car on the road, children would run out to see it passing buy.
Dentist came from Mt Gambier one day a fortnight to Penola, extractions cost 2 shillings a tooth.
Mary McKillop taught school in a disused cow shed, I can remember the remains of the shed in Janet McDonald's paddock in Bowden Street behind the Church of England.
I went to physical culture exercises once a week in the Presbyterian Church Sunday School building. Murial McLeod a school teacher, was our teacher. Our Tennis Club (competitive) was behind the St Andrews Presbyterian Church. Jean Balnaves, Clarrie Glynn, Elsie Hall & myself made up St Andrew's team. I played competitive Table Tenis in evenings in St Marys Sunday School hall. I also played Croquet in the Penola Ladies Team.
Often on my way to school I would go messages for some elderly people, one penny was my reward. We would go to Mrs Tragenza's Tuck Shop, the cockatoo would call "shoppo" and she would come to serve. The shop was very small about six foot square.
A house built opposite the school cost 5,000 pounds. Two children were born there, Naomi Temple and George Temple. Dada Blight built the house.
I have a photo taken of my sister at her 14th birthday, held at the back of the Butcher's Shop.
Petticoat Lane was always much talked about, I would often deliver meat to the elderly down there.
The main street (Church St) wasn't very big. A blacksmith shop next to Drapery, Produce, Clothing, Boots and Shoesstore, Mooneys had charge of the Royal Oak Hotel and Riley's owned the other one at the opposite end of Penola.
Penola always had 2 or 3 race meetings every year where the horses ran around a swamp. Sunday School picnics were also held at the Race Course. My mother would always win Ladies Race, she was a good runner. In the horse racing my father would ride Maude our pony and always bring home first prize for trotting.
The State School grew and a new room was built for Domestic cooking for the girls and woodworking for the boys.
When I came to Adelaide to work I continued playing hockey and then started to learn Cricket. I didn't play much cricket as I didn't habve much time to practice.
At 82 years I still do regular exercises.
The first movie picture shown on a screen was by Mr Squires at The Penola Institute while I was still attending school.
Hetherington and Son were local skin buyers. There were two bakeries, Halls (next door) and Heavers.
Abe Grover an old batchelor lived many years opposite our Butcher Shop. Billie Balnaves owner of the Grocer and Ladies Wear etc lived near. Robert Balnaves was in opposition to his Brother.
Mary McKillop Church on the corner of Peticoat Lane.
Doctors residence was on the Mt Gambier Road and a cemetery on each side of town.
Two Butcher Shops existed Pattersons and Grays. D J Lynn (Roy and Amy) had a grocery and clothing business, Emma Plummer worked there. George Mepstead was caretaker at the Institute. George Temple was the Clock repairer. A show was held in October each year at the Showgrounds. Flints had a lolly shop. Winters girls a shop further along. Vida player sometimes for dances.
Reverand L B Riley in charge of the Church of England. Dobbin (Mr Cooper) was in charge of the Presbyterian Church. A Priest would come from Naracoote to service the Catholic Church.
